Pillows – yes, please. Blankets have been checked. Check for lamps, shelves, and slippers. Food for an emergency – yes. The list could go on and on. For most of us, leaving home and moving into student housing is a major step.
While many students are fortunate to stay at home or move right into private housing, a huge percentage of first-year students end up in university housing — the student dorm. The following are some of the advantages of living in a student dorm.
When everyone is living in student housing like monash university accomodation, it’s easy to form friends. At the beginning of the year, everyone will be nervous, thrilled, and eager to socialize, so living in a student dorm allows you to take advantage of the pleasant atmosphere and form close ties. Some dorms even have a majority of international students, which is a huge plus if you want to meet people from all over the world!
Apart from providing more opportunities to meet new people, living in a student dorm can also help you study. I’m still awake at 3 a.m. and need to talk to someone regarding tomorrow’s exam — see who else is still awake! Are you looking for a specific book that you couldn’t discover at the library? Make a note on the bulletin board to see if anyone else in your dorm has a copy.
Living on your own or with a roommate is not the same as living at home. Many of us, including myself, grew up without having to perform a lot of housework, repairs, or bill paying. So, if you have the option of staying at home or living in a student dorm, the latter is an excellent way to learn how to be less reliant on your family while still being independent! So, do you want to live in a student dorm or not? That is the question, and it isn’t one that is difficult to answer. I strongly advise students to live in a dorm at least once during the following three or four years of their university careers.
Because student housing is usually located close to the main university campus, living in a student dorm allows you to set your alarm clock for later in the morning. In some circumstances, classrooms and facilities may be housed in the same building or collection of buildings.
